INTRODUCING A NEW CAT TO YOUR DOG (OR DOGS)
Most cats and dogs can live in harmony together, many becoming very best friends! All it takes is a bit of care and sensitivity. Here are a few tips.
Introduce them gradually, letting them check each other out from a distance. Don't force them to get close, allow the relationship to develop at its own pace.
Supervise them carefully until they are friends. For the first few weeks, don't leave them alone together when you are sleeping or out of the house.
Trim kitty's claws at first to avoid scratches on pups nose.
Dogs and cats have different nutritional needs. Cats require more protein, fat, and the amino acid Taurine, than dogs do. Be sure that each eats ONLY his own food. Don't allow one to finish the other's leftovers. To ensure this, meals should either be supervised or served in different areas.
Reinforce the idea that it is fun to have this cat around by arranging for pleasant things to happen when they are together -- a special treat, a snack of favorite food or new toys.
